What this is

Partial fill-in breaks the top of the pool wall below grade, perforates the floor, and buries the rest of the shell in place. Full removal takes out the entire shell, walls, floor, plumbing, and equipment pad and hauls it off-site. They are different scopes with different long-term consequences, not two prices for the same job.

When this is the wrong fix

How it's done.

Here we lay out what distinguishes the two scopes so a homeowner can choose with eyes open. Partial fill-in means the top 18 to 36 inches of the pool wall are broken down to a point below finished grade, the floor is perforated or broken up in several places so water can't collect in an intact basin, and the remaining shell — walls and floor below that break line — stays buried in the ground permanently. The hole is then backfilled over what's left. Full removal means the entire shell is demolished and hauled away: for gunite, that's the walls and floor slab in their entirety; for vinyl-liner steel-wall pools, the wall panels, liner, and floor are pulled; for fiberglass, the shell is broken into removable sections or extracted. Plumbing runs, skimmers, main drains, and the equipment pad are disconnected and removed with it, and the excavation is backfilled with new material from the base up.

Process

How the job runs.

    Confirm shell type (gunite/shotcrete, vinyl-liner with steel or polymer wall, or fiberglass) and locate all plumbing, electrical, and equipment tie-ins before any demolition decision is made.

    Drain the pool and disconnect electrical bonding and equipment circuits; cap or remove gas and water lines feeding the equipment pad.

  3. 03

    For a partial fill-in: break the wall down to 18-36 inches below finished grade and perforate or break the floor in multiple spots so the buried shell cannot trap or hold water.

    For full removal: demolish and extract the entire shell, floor, and plumbing, then load and haul the debris off-site for disposal.

    Backfill in 8-12 inch loose lifts, compacting each lift before placing the next, using clean fill for non-structural areas or structural/engineered fill where anything will later bear load.

If backfill is dumped in rather than placed in controlled lifts and compacted to a percentage of standard Proctor density, air voids remain in the soil. Those voids close gradually under rain infiltration and surface loading, which is why lawns and pavers over old, uncompacted pool fills often sink or crack years after the work was done.

Not without a geotechnical evaluation of that specific footprint first. A partial fill-in leaves a buried shell and disturbed soil profile that behaves differently from undisturbed ground, and anything with a footing, slab, or concentrated load risks differential settlement if it's built over that area without engineering input.

It changes the difficulty and cost of each scope more than it changes the recommendation. Gunite shells are harder to break down for a partial fill-in and harder to fully demolish for removal; vinyl-liner steel walls collapse and section more easily; fiberglass shells often come out in large rigid pieces that some yards can't access for full removal, which sometimes pushes a homeowner toward partial fill-in by necessity rather than preference.

Both scopes require re-establishing grade so water sheds away from the house rather than collecting in the settled area. A pool footprint sits lower relative to surrounding soil once backfilled, and if the surface isn't graded and topsoil restored properly, it becomes a low spot that ponds after rain regardless of which removal scope was used.
