When this is the wrong fix

  • If a fixture backup is isolated to one drain (a single sink or tub) rather than the main line, the issue is almost always in that branch line, not the lateral, and doesn't need a full mainline camera run.
  • If the line has an active heavy blockage, a camera run often can't get past it — jetting or snaking to clear the obstruction usually needs to happen first, then the camera goes in to see what's beneath it.
  • If you already have a recent, complete camera inspection on file for that exact line and nothing has changed since, paying for a repeat inspection is unnecessary.
Method

How it's done.

The inspection starts at an existing cleanout or, if none exists, through a pulled toilet or a temporary access point. The camera head, mounted on a flexible push-rod, is fed through the line while a technician watches a live monitor and records footage, noting pipe material, joint condition, any cracks, offsets, bellies, root intrusion, or scale buildup, and the location of any lateral connections. A sonde (a small radio transmitter built into or clipped near the camera head) emits a signal that a handheld locating wand picks up from the surface, allowing us to trace the exact path of the pipe and mark it with paint or flags, along with a depth reading at each marked point. This combination — visual footage plus surface locating — is what lets us tell you not just that there's a problem, but exactly where it is and how deep, which is essential information before excavation, before trenchless repair planning, or before any other utility work crosses that path. Footage is reviewed with the homeowner and, where useful, provided as documentation for permitting, insurance, or a real estate transaction.
